CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team returns to action this week as the team travels to West Chicago, Ill. to compete in the John Dallio Memorial. The Salukis have taken top honors at the event the past two years are are hoping for a similar experience this time.
Hosted by DePaul University, the John Dallio Memorial is a 54-hole tournament set to take place at Prairie Landing Golf Club. The par-72 course plays at 6,968 yards.
Making the trip for the Salukis are seniors Sean McNemar and Roger Welch, along with juniors Mark Schmitz, Andrew Gwinup and Daniel Tomlin.
"We won the tournament the past two years, so I think everyone is gearing up for us," said Saluki head coach Leroy Newton.
"We play the course pretty good. If the weather conditions are bad, that won't bother us."
The weather could prove to be a factor in the tournament with showers and lower temperatures expected for Monday.
SIU is coming off the Butler Fall Golf Invitational last week in which the team took second, finishing six strokes behind this week's host, DePaul.
"The team wants to see if DePaul really is as good as they were last week," said Newton. "We know they have a big advantage on their home course. Let's just go play and see what happens."
The Salukis finished strong last week in Indianapolis. The team shot 6-over-par in the first round but came in with even-par 284 in the second round to finish second.
McNemar led the team, finishing tied for second with a 5-under-par 137. Schmitz also finished in the top 10, coming in eighth with a 2-over 144.
Tomlin shot 2-over 71 in the first round but struggled in the second round with a 77, finishing tied for 35th.
Gwinup and Welch also finished tied for 35th. The duo struggled the first day with Gwinup shooting a 78 while Welch carded an 80. The second round saw improvement for both as Welch came in with 1-under-par 70 while Gwinup posted a 1-over 72.
The Salukis will see some familiar faces this week as four of the 13 teams in the field also played last week at Butler (Youngstown State, Eastern Illinois, Wisconsin-Green Bay and DePaul). Also in the field is MVC-member Evansville.
Cincinnati, Oakland, Wright State, Detroit Mercy, Cleveland State, Dayton, Lewis, Saint Louis, Western Illinois and West Florida round out the field.
The 54-hole tournament opens on Monday with 36 holes starting at 8:30 a.m. The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 7:20 a.m.
