TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Southern Illinois finished 11th in a 21-team field at the Seminole Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday after weather delays over the weekend.
The Salukis opened strong with a first-round 293, placing them inside the top seven. A second-round 307 dropped them to 14th, but a 302 in the final round pushed SIU back near the top 10.
Director of Golf Justin Fetcho said consistency remains the team's focus.
"This event was another where our consistency didn't show up in each round," Fetcho said. "As the coach, I am continuing to look for ways to help us improve through our mentality and decision-making so we don't make as many unforced errors."
Jaesung Na led the Salukis, finishing 19th at 5-over par. Anthony Deshutter followed, tying for 22nd at 6-over during his birthday weekend. Frank Bellino placed tied for 45th at 12-over, while Oliver Ulrich and Benjamin Keil each finished tied for 90th at 19-over.
"Jae and Anthony played well this week, both finishing in the top 25," Fetcho said. "Jae is playing some really good golf this spring, and Anthony has continued to be a force all year. I'm proud to see Jae's progress mentally, and Anthony also showed improvement in that area this week."
Weather disruptions played a role, as delays stretched the second round into the following day.
"The golf course at Florida State is a very difficult but fair test," Fetcho said. "The weather conditions added another layer of difficulty. This course requires discipline, toughness and a strong mental approach. There are no holes where you can relax — you'll be punished. We did that well at times, but we need to maintain that focus for all 54 holes."
Southern Illinois returns to action April 6 at the Racer Intercollegiate, hosted by Murray State.
"We need to handle adversity better and continue to adjust throughout our rounds," Fetcho said. "That will be a major focus as we prepare for our next event."
