GUELPH, Ontario-Katy Freeman pitched in 15 points, including 13 in the first half to lead Southern Illinois to a 69-49 win over Wilfrid-Laurier University earlier today in exhibition action at W.F. Mitchell Athletics Center.
Freeman, who hit 7-of-13 from the field, helped SIU set the tone early.
Freeman's hot shooting on the perimeter was complemented by a strong inside game from Saluki post players India Bruster, Carlai Moore and Teresa Parker. The trio helped SIU outscore the Hawks, 30-15, inside the paint.
Wilfrid-Laurier, who fell behind by as many as 20 points in the game, struggled from the field in the second half, where it made only eight field goals in 40 attempts.
Freeman was joined by Jayme Sweere, who also contributed double figures with 12 points. Sweere went 5-of-8 from the field, pulled down six rebounds and knocked down a pair of threes.
Parker topped the Dawgs with nine boards, as SIU outrebounded the Hawks, 51-40.
SIU wraps up its Canadian exhibition tour tonight when it faces the University of Guelph at 7 p.m.
