CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis doubles team of Sergio Sanchez (Jr.) and Feilpe Villasenor (So.) is ranked 28th in the nation according to the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on January 10th.
This fall the duo went 4-2, including a win against the #6 nationally ranked team from Arkansas. They also made it to the quarterfinals match at the ITA Regional Tournament to finish out the fall season.
"They are a really good team," Saluki tennis Coach Dann Nelson said. "It is quite an honor for Southern to have somebody in the rankings."
Both Sanchez and Villasenor are from Chile and grew up playing tennis with one another. Since they are used to playing on clay courts their style of play is different from most, and has proven successful throughout the fall.
"It was only natural for me to try and play them together," Nelson said. "They kept telling me, `Coach we want to play together. We want to play together.' They have had good results."
The men's tennis team travels to Richmond, Ky. this weekend to begin the spring season with matches against Eastern Kentucky, Dayton and Louisville.
