Men's Tennis ends day one of MVC Individual Tournament

Des Moines, Iowa - Southern Illinois men's tennis finished the first day of competition at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship Friday. Sergio Sanchez was the only Saluki to win a singles or doubles match, defeating Vinny Meens of Creighton in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Tomas Gonzalez lost in three sets to Matt Metully of Bradley in the No. 4 flight.
Even though the Salukis only won one match on the day, tennis coach Dann Nelson was happy with the way Gonzalez and Sanchez played.
"Tomas Gonzalez played his best match of the year, even though it ended in a loss," said Nelson.
With all the MVC teams playing in the same tournament Nelson was able to evaluate the players and see where the Salukis need to improve.
"We have a lot of work to do, it was a disappointing first day. We are going to have to work very hard to even compete in the conference."
Tournament play continues tomorrow at the Drake Tennis Center.
