CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis match against Charleston Southern ended early in a 2-2 tie. Rain delayed the start time for two hours, then darkness forced the teams to quit before finishing three singles matches.
The Buccaneers dominated in doubles play winning all three matches.
"Charleston Southern played extremely good doubles," said tennis coach Dann Nelson. "They had big serves and attacked the net really well. It kind of caught our guys off-guard."
In singles action Sergio Sanchez and Andrei Bubnov both had wins at the No. 3 and 4 spots respectively.
Three singles matches were left unfinished when the sun set. The Salukis had the lead in two of the matches and one was tied.
Rodrigo Lama's No. 2 match was tied 4-4 in the third set.
Tomas Gonzalez won the first set at the No. 5 spot and had a 4-2 lead in the second set when the match was called.
At the No. 6 spot Nick Bauer's match was also in the third set. Bauer was ahead 4-3.
After losing the doubles matches, Nelson was proud of the way the Salukis regrouped.
"If they would have had lights," Nelson said. "I was pretty confident we were going to win four singles matches. I just wish we could have finished."
The Salukis are unable to finish the match with Charleston Southern tomorrow because they play Kutztown in Hilton Head, S.C.
