HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory against Kutztown.
The Salukis battled back after losing the doubles point to move to 3-4 on the season.
"We didn't play good doubles for the second day in a row," said tennis coach Dann Nelson. "We have to play better doubles or it is going to be very difficult for us to win matches."
The Salukis found themselves in the same position as yesterday after losing the doubles point, and again they responded and came out firing in singles.
Sergio Sanchez, Andrei Bubnov, Tomas Gonzalez and Nick Bauer all picked up wins in singles play.
At the No. 3 spot Sanchez knocked off Hlubinski of Kutztown 6-0, 6-4.
"Sergio has been doing really well," said Nelson "He has rattled off several wins now in a row."
Bubnov and Gonzalez both won 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 4 and 5 spots respectively.
The score was tied 3-3 going into the final match with Bauer and Appinen of Kutztown. Bauer lost the first set, but fought back taking the win at the No. 6 spot in three sets.
"Nick stepped up huge for us and closed out the win," Nelson said.
The Salukis hope to pick up another win tomorrow as they face Campbellsville.
