CARBONDALE, Ill. - After playing nine away matches the Southern Illinois men's tennis team will host two home matches this weekend. The Salukis play Southern Indiana Thursday on the indoor courts at Sports Blast. Saturday is the start of conference play as Indiana State comes to Carbondale.
The Salukis are coming off a three-game win streak. SIU defeated both Kutztown and Campbellsville over spring break and Eastern Illinois a few days earlier.
"We have two big home matches," said tennis coach Dann Nelson. "We are pretty confident right now. The guys are playing well, and we want to keep it going."
Sophomore Feilpe Villasenor is 6-3 in singles action, and has been playing in the number one and two spots. Junior Sergio Sanchez has won five singles matches in a row at the number three position.
Freshman Andrei Bubnov and senior Tomas Gonzalez have both won their last three matches at the four and five spots respectively.
"We are just excited to play at home," Nelson said. "We had a good spring break, and we are ready to go."
Thursday's indoor match begins at 3:30 p.m. Weather permitting Saturday's match will be on the outdoor University courts at 2 p.m.
