CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University senior right fielder Grant Gerrard was named this week's Missouri Valley Conference Player-of-the-Week.
A native of Castle Rock, Colo., Gerrard was a key player in SIU's first-ever series road win at No. 11 Wichita State last weekend, as well as the Salukis' 3-1 record over the last seven days.
He hit .467 (7-for-15) with six runs scored, a double, his second career triple and four RBI to lead the Salukis. He also notched two stolen bases.
Gerrard narrowly missed hitting for the cycle when he went 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple, three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base against Murray State on Mar. 22.
His single up the middle in the seventh inning of game three against the nationally-ranked Shockers ignited a stretch of five-straight, two-out hits. Gerrard went 4-for-12 with three runs, one RBI and a stolen base in three games against WSU.
Gerrard, who garners the honor for the first time in his career, is the second Saluki to be named MVC Player-of-the-Week this season. Kevin Koski also won the award on Feb. 27.
