CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Saluki offense could not get enough going in a 5-1 loss at Southeast Missouri Tuesday night in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Gabe Petrucelli provided the lone run of the night on a solo home run to right field to get the scoring started in the top of the second.
The Redhawks were similarly unable to put out consistent offense, but three home runs in the second and third innings gave them a 4-1 lead, and that would be all their pitching staff needed.
Charlie Miller did an excellent job of steadying the ship for Southern, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep his team in the game.
The Salukis' best chance to score came in the seventh inning, but they never got the big base hit with runners in scoring position to push more runners across.
Blake Kimball worked himself out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth thanks to two miraculous defensive plays, the first made by himself. A wild pitch bounced perfectly off the backstop, and the hustling Kimball was able to scoop the ball and tag a potential run scorer on a dive. Two pitches later, Kye Watson made a diving catch down the right-field line.
Gio De Graauw (L, 0-2) took the loss for SIU on a night where the pitching staff allowed just four hits.
