Men's Golf finishes eighth at ASU Indian Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. - After holding the lead following the first round and sitting in second after the second round, the Southern Illinois University men's golf team posted its worst round of the season as it finished eighth at the Arkansas State University Indian Classic.
Hosted by Arkansas State University, the ASU Indian Classic was a 54-hole tournament that took place at RidgePoint Golf Club. The par-72 course played at 6,137 yards.
The Salukis shot one of their best rounds of the season, a 1-over 289, in the first round of the tournament, coupling it with a 301 in the second round to take second place heading into Tuesday's final round.
SIU's 33-over-par 321 performance in the final round slid the Salukis down to eighth place in the final standings as the team finished with a 47-over-par 911.
The University of New Orleans, who entered the day in third place, shot a 303 in the final round, tying with Oral Roberts University at 895. Oral Roberts shot the low final round, jumping up to the lead from sixth place with a 296.
New Orleans defeated Oral Roberts in a playoff to win the team championship. Northern Iowa's Derek Bohlen fired rounds of 72-72-71--215 to win the individual title.
Senior co-captain Roger Welch, who entered the day in a tie for second, closed out the tournament with a 7-over-par 79, finishing tied for ninth with a 6-over 222.
Junior Andrew Gwinup finished alongside seniors Sean McNemar and Chad Cooper with 14-over 222s. The trio finished in a tie for 34th.
Junior Daniel Tomlin rounded out Saluki scoring, finishing in a tie for 71st with a 241.
The ASU Indian Classic wraps up the regular season for SIU. The Salukis will take a week off before traveling to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship, April 24-25, at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchingson, Kan.
