CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University (18-12) hits the road to face Tennessee-Martin (9-16) Tuesday at 3 p.m., CST. Tomorrow's game is one of five non-conference matchups for the Dawgs this week.
The Salukis and Skyhawks will make up their game initially scheduled for Feb. 22, which was postponed due to inclement weather. SIU beat UTM, 7-1, in the first meeting between the two teams less than a week ago in Carbondale.
SIU, who dropped two of three games to Bradley in its Missouri Valley Conference home opener last weekend, will look to get back on track against UTM.
The Dawgs have been pitching and hitting well enough to win, but the defense continues to be a cause for concern. SIU has committed 71 errors through 30 games this season, including 11 in its last five contests. The Salukis committed four or more errors in a game for the sixth time this season on Sunday against the Braves.
Offensively, freshman Scott Elmendorf continues to lead the Salukis with a .370 average. He has hit safely in 14 of his last 18 games.
UTM enters the week with an overall record of 9-16, with losses in three of its last four games. Kevin Holt is the only Skyhawk hitting over .300 (.320) in a minimum of 14 starts. The Skyhawks are hitting just .247 as a team.
SIU is undefeated at 3-0 versus Ohio Valley Conference opponents this season.
