CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team picked up their first conference win as they defeated Wichita State 5-2. The Salukis won the doubles point and four singles matches in their victory over the Shockers.
"We have seniors on this team that have never beaten Wichita State, so this was a great accomplishment today," said tennis coach Dann Nelson.
In doubles play Feilpe Villasenor and Sergio Sanchez paired in the number two match to defeat Thiago Dos Santos and Tiago Espirito Santo 8-5. Tomas Gonzalez and Bojan Ilievski teamed up to bring down Augusto Alvarado and Moti Eisikovits in the number three match 8-5.
"We played pretty well today," said Nelson. "The doubles point was key for us, and we used that momentum into singles."
The Salukis took the early 1-0 lead heading into singles action and never looked back. Rodrigo Lama defeated Boris Gubic in the number two game 6-4, 6-2.
Both Sergio Sanchez and Andrei Bubnov added to their winning streaks at the number three and four matches respectively. Sanchez went three sets against Tiago Espirito Santo, but pulled out the 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 win making it 13 dual match singles wins in a row. Bubnov ended things in two sets 6-4, 7-5, tallying his 11th win in a row.
Tomas Gonzalez also had a three set win in the number five match. He defeated Augusto Alvarado 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4.
"We had a lot of people step up today," Nelson said. "It was good to bounce back from the loss yesterday."
With the win SIU improves to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the MVC. The Salukis have two away matches next weekend as they travel to Drake and Creighton.
