CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team returns to action Monday, Sept. 25 with the John Dallio Memorial at Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago, Ill.
Hosted by DePaul University, the John Dallio Memorial is a 54-hole tournament set to take place at Prairie Landing Golf Club. The par-72 course plays at 6,905.
Making the trip for the Salukis will be Andrew Gwinup, Daniel Tomlin, Andrew Rauscher, Matt Ellis and Blake Driskell.
The John Dallio Memorial is the second tournament of the season for the Salukis. SIU opened the season two weeks ago with a ninth-place finish at the Wasioto Winds Kick Off Invitational.
With a week break, head coach Leroy Newton is optimistic about the team's play.
"The first tournament gave us an idea of where we stand and everyone has been working on their game since then. Some are working on short game, some irons and some with their driver," said Newton.
"We've had some really good qualifying rounds for this week, so I'm looking for a good performance out of the team."
The Salukis have a good history at the Dallio Memorial. SIU won the event in 2003 and 2004, but slipped to a seventh-place finish in 2005.
Gwinup and Tomlin both played in the Dallio Memorial last season. Gwinup led the team, finishing in a tie for sixth with a 1-over-par 217 while Tomlin finished in a tie for 49th with a 16-over 232.
"We won this tournament two years in a row, but didn't finish so well last season," said Newton. "So, these boys feel like they have something to prove and will be looking to take back the title."
SIU will be one of 14 teams playing this week. Also competing in the tournament are South Dakota State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Northern Iowa, Loyola-Chicago, Eastern Illinois, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Youngstown State, Wright State, Cincinnati, Detroit-Mercy, Evansville and Notre Dame.
Play is set to begin Monday with first-round tee times starting at 7:10 a.m. The second round will immediately follow with play beginning in the early afternoon.
Final-round action is scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
