WEST CHICAGO, Ill. - In only his second appearance as a Saluki, junior transfer Andrew Rauscher is already making his presence known as he tied for first place at the John Dallio Memorial. The River Falls, Wisc., native lost a one-hole playoff for the individual title as the Southern Illinois University golf team rallied back to tie for third place overall.
Hosted by DePaul University, the John Dallio Memorial was a 54-hole tournament that took place at Prairie Landing Golf Club. The par-72 course played at 6,968 yards.
After 54 holes of play, Rauscher found himself in a tie with DePaul's Matthew McMahon at 6-under-par 210.
"I played with him (McMahon) on the first day and I knew that he was playing well," said Rauscher. "On the playoff hole, I had a great first shot, but left my second shot short and he was able to take advantage of that."
After shooting even-par 72 in the first round, Rauscher came back to card back-to-back rounds of 3-under 69 for a tournament-total of 6-under-par 210. The Dallio Memorial is the second tournament in a row that Rauscher finished 6-under.
The rest of the team followed suit through the tournament. Southern Illinois struggled in the first round, posting a 16-over-par 304. But , the Salukis fought their way back into the tournament with a 2-over-par 290 in the second round to finish the first day in sixth place.
SIU continued its roll in the final round, carding its first team score under par in almost a year with a 1-under-par 287 to finish tied for third.
"It was a good tournament, a great golf course. We had a rough first round but we came back and had two great rounds to finish well," said SIU head coach Leroy Newton.
"Everybody tried their best today and we came out pretty good."
As well as Rauscher played, the team's low final score belonged to senior co-captain Andrew Gwinup with a 4-under-par 68.
The Glen Carbon, Ill. native struggled in the first round with a 2-over 74, but kept at it in the second round and carded a 1-under-par 71 to finish the first day in a tie for eighth place.
But, with his final-round 68, which tied for low final-round score among the entire 73-player field, Gwinup was able to finish tied for third with a 3-under-par 213.
Rounding out scoring for SIU were Blake Driskell, Daniel Tomlin and Matt Ellis. Driskell finished tied for 43rd with a 13-over-par 229, followed by Tomlin in a tie for 54th with an 18-over 234.
Ellis finished tied for 57th with a 19-over-par 235.
