CARBONDALE, Ill. - More than 150 Southern Illinois University student-athletes are set to be honored at 12 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 1 at the Saluki Scholars Banquet.
Parents, coaches, athletic administrators, university administrators and faculty members will all be in attendance at the event that will also honor the donors of endowed scholarships and the student-athletes that receive them.
Student-athletes recognized at the baquet earned at least a 3.0 GPA during the 2005-06 academic year.
"The Saluki Scholars Banquet is a chance to celebrate our student-athletes' commitment to academics. It's a great opportunity for everyone to come together to support our student-athletes and recognize their hard work in the classroom," said SIU Assistant Athletic Director of student Services Kristina Therriault.
"We are extremely proud of their accomplishments as students."
The banquet, sponsored by 710 Bookstore, will also have a keynote address by former SIU women's basketball player Bridgett Bonds Williams, who is currently the head women's basketball coach at Wright State University.
Williams was a standout player during her four years at SIU (1985-88). She was selected as the 1988 Gateway Conference Most Valuable Player and was a Kodak All-America Team selection.
She is No. 9 all-time at SIU in career scoring and No. 8 all-time in career rebounds.
During her time at SIU, the Salukis made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1986 and followed it up with another appearance in 1987.
Williams graduated with a bachelor of science degree in advanced technical studies from SIU in 1988 and followed it up with a master of science degree in vocational educational studies/business education in 1991. She was also named to the SIU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
