CARBONDALE, Ill. – Just one Saluki Athletics team remains in action after baseball's season ended at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. This week, track and field sends select athletes to the NCAA West Regionals.
Baseball (27-32, 14-10)
It was a memorable week for baseball, who reached Championship Sunday in the MVC Tournament before bowing out.
First up was an 8-4 win over #5 Evansville on Wednesday. Mason Schwalbach hit a homer for SIU as he and Tim Simay combined for five of Southern's eight RBIs. On the mound, Andrew Evans was fantastic in his start, allowing two runs across six innings of work.
The Salukis were then put on the ropes by #1 UIC with an 11-1 loss. Southern's lone run came courtesy of a Jacob McKenzie RBI.
One loss away from elimination, SIU kept their season alive with a 3-2 win over Evansville. Jaden Flores and Mckenize had RBIs for Southern while Charlie Miller went eight innings deep in his start while allowing just two runs.
The Salukis then took down the two seed, Indiana State on Saturday, 7-5. Kaleb Hall had the biggest hit of the game with his grand slam in the ninth. Out of the bullpen, Dylan Petrey was clutch for SIU with his two innings of scoreless work.
In the semifinal, Southern then beat the host team, #3 Murray State, 9-7. Simay and Schwalbach both had a pair of RBIs while Meade Johnson earned the save after shutting out the Racer for the final three innings of play, sending Southern to their first Championship Sunday since 2022.
Needing to beat UIC twice to claim the title, the Salukis fell to the Flames 7-2 in game one. Kristian Sprawling had SIU's only RBI while Evans was solid in his start, allowing a pair of runs across five innings.
At the conclusion of the 2026 season, SIU sits with an overall record of 27-32 while they went 14-10 in conference play.
Track and Field
Track and field is back at this week when they send five athletes and a relay team to NCAA West Regionals in Fayetteville, Arkansas, from Wednesday, May 27, through Saturday, May 30.
