CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois Student-Athletes from 13 different sports collected canned food items from over 850 Southern Illinois residencies for two hours on Nov. 4.
Student-athletes from football, men's and women's golf, swimming and diving, cross country, track and field, softball, baseball, women's tennis and volleyball collected over three thousand cans of food, and donated them to the Good Samaritan House in Carbondale, Ill.
Good Samaritan House employee, Sharon O'Daniell, said she was amazed at the amount of food the student-athletes were able to collect.
"The donations were so much appreciated, and it was overwhelming how much support they gave to not only the residents, but to all the community members who visit the Good Samaritan House regularly from the food they collected," said O'Daniell.
SIU Student-Athletes participate in many community service projects throughout the year to give back to the community.
Anyone interested in donating food can drop items off at The Good Samaritan House, located at 701 S. Marion Street behind the SIU Student Recreation Center.
