CARBONDALE, Ill. - In addition to hosting the University of Massachusetts in the NCAA football playoffs, and the No. 15-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in a nationally televised men's basketball game, Saluki Athletics is also hosting over 150 prospective students, and their parents for the fourth-annual Saluki Athletics Recruiting Weekend on Saturday, Dec. 1.
The recruiting weekend will begin at 6 p.m. in the Troutt-Wittmann Center, and include a welcome from Chancellor Dr. Fernando Trevino, an overview of academic and athletic scholarships and services, information regarding NCAA eligibility, as well as a question and answer with selected Saluki student-athletes.
"What a great opportunity for us to showcase our university and provide prospective students with what it means to have a full university experience," said Assistant Athletics Director of Compliance Christian Spears. "It really doesn't get much better than having a top-five football team in the NCAA playoffs, and a top-25 basketball program playing a Big Ten team both at home on the same day."
Spears said this Saturday is a historic and special day, but it did not happen by accident.
"To be honest with you, (Director of Athletics) Mario (Moccia), and I discussed the possibility of this happening way back in August when we set the date for the recruiting weekend, and here we are with a great opportunity to promote all of our athletic programs by showing just how special it is to be a Saluki."
According to Spears, all 18 intercollegiate athletic teams are participating in the recruiting weekend with some teams hosting as many as 10 prospective students.
Head volleyball coach Brenda Winkeler said this is a great chance to show prospective student-athletes what it means to be a Salukis
"We know how special this place is, and we just need to show our recruits and their families, what we already know," said Winkeler. "We win here, we win with integrity, and we provide great educational opportunity with a vivid university experience."
