Men's Tennis defeats Northern Illinois, 6-1

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team hosted their second home match of the season today when they took on the Huskies of Northern Illinois University at the University Courts.
The Salukis had a great day, beating the Huskies 6-1 and improving their record to 6-4.
"Last year was the first time we had beaten Northern in at least six years and for us to play them today and come out on top 6-1 is a testament to how hard the guys are working," said head coach Dann Nelson.
SIU got off to a good start as Hugo Vidal and Rodrigo Lama teamed up in No. 3 doubles to take down Javier Bernabe and Alfonso Monroy, 8-4. Sergio Sanchez and Milos Stankovic fought hard in No. 1 doubles action, but fell short to Brian Livingston and Adam Ford, 8-6.
With the first two matches split, the doubles point came down to Felipe Villasenor and Lucas Waked in No. 2 doubles action. Villasenor and Waked battled with NIU's Alex Friesen and Jimmy Chu. With the match tied at 7-all the Saluki duo surged ahead, winning the next point and the tiebreak to give the Dawgs a 1-0 lead in the match.
After winning the doubles point the Salukis never looked back, winning five of the six singles matches on their way to the win.
Villasenor, Vidal, Lama and Waked all finished off their opponents in straight sets. Nick Bauer dropped his first set to Monroy, but battled back to win the next two and the match.
"After taking the doubles point we jumped out ahead winning the first set in 4 out of six singles matches," said Nelson. "Northern did not give up and made it difficult for us to finish them off. I am very pleased with the way the team responded to the challenge. They stayed focused and it showed in the results."
