Women's Golf Finishes Second at Saluki Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team finished second at the 2007 Saluki Invitational with a team total of 613 after two days of play.
"We're pretty disappointed because we played pretty well all day except for the finishing hole," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "We pretty much had it won, but we didn't finish very strong. We let Eastern Michigan slip in there and beat us."
Eastern Michigan won the tournament with a 610 (307-303). The Eagles' sophomore Stephany Fleet took home medalist honors with her 145 (72-73).
Samantha Sutzer was the Salukis' low scorer with her round-two 74, which brought her tournament total to a 152 and tied her for 5th place overall. Kelly Gerlach finished tied for 5th as well with a 152 (73-79).
Josie Lowder shot a six-over par 78 today, bringing her tournament total to 154 and placing her in 8th.Braidy Hood finished in 12th place with her 156 (77-79).
Kate Laegeler had a rough second round, shooting a 10-over par and bringing her total to 159 (77-82) and placing her in a tie for 21st. Lauren May tied for 48th place with her 168 (81-87).
Although the Salukis did not win the tournament, Daugherty was pleased with how her team performed against its conference foes.
"Our bright spot was that we did beat the rest of the Valley teams," said Daugherty. "Everyone but Missouri State and Wichita State, they weren't at this tournament. That was encouraging. Obviously our goal of the season is to win the Valley Championship. It's a high point that we did beat all the Valley schools."
The Salukis will return to action on April 6 and 7 at the Illini Spring Classic in Champaign.
