CARBONDALE, Ill. - Ashley Hamby pitched her second no-hitter of the season as the No. 20/22 Southern Illinois University softball team rebounded from a 4-3 loss in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with Missouri State for an 8-0, five-inning win in the second game.
The Salukis (31-9, 12-3 MVC) got off to a slow start in the first game of the twinbill, not picking up their fist hit until the fifth inning, but came back in a fury in the second game with nine hits, including a home run by Jayme Wamsley, in the five-inning contest.
"I was very disappointed that it took us until the fifth inning of game one to arrive at the ballpark. We got ourselves in a hole and tried hard to come back but just couldn't quite get it done in game one," said SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock.
"In game two, Ashley Hamby threw a tremendous ball game and we needed it at the time and the kids did a good job of adjusting against Melissa Porche."
Giving up six hits in the first game, along with three Saluki errors, allowed Missouri State (18-22, 7-8 MVC) to grab a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
MSU's Michelle Armentrout hit a leadoff solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to break the scoreless tie. The Bears came right back in the top of the fifth inning, leading off with three straight base hits that ended up putting three more runs on the board.
Katie Wilson cut the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, hitting a double off of the center-field fence that scored Lauren Haas from first base.
The Salukis kept the rally going in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two more runs with a pair of leadoff hits by Krystal Stein and Tiffanie Dismore. After reaching base on a double and a single, respectively, Stein made it across the plate on an error by MSU shortstop Jessie Smith while Dismore scored on a ground out by Amanda Clifton, cutting the lead to 4-3.
But, Missouri State pitcher Melissa Porche and the Bear defense sat the Salukis down in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win.
Porche pitched the complete-game win with seven strikeouts, giving up only four hits and one walk. She gave up three runs in the game, only one of which was earned.
Cassidy Scoggins takes the loss for SIU and falls to 16-6 on the season. She pitched all seven innings, giving up six hits and four runs, three of which were earned, while striking out six batters.
In the second game of the doubleheader, SIU took advantage of the offensive momentum that it got toward the end of the first game and came out slugging in the final game of the series.
Dismore, who went 4-for-7 on the day with a run and two RBI, led off the game by taking a cut at the first pitch she saw for her first triple of the season.
Her leadoff hit was the first of three in the inning that turned in to four Saluki runs.
Haas followed Dismore on base after getting bit by a pitched and then stole second to give SIU two runners in scoring position.
With two runners on, Alicia Garza hit a bloop single that fell right on the second-base bag, bring Dismore in to score.
Again with two runners on in scoring position, Wamsley stepped up and swung at the first pitch she saw from Porche, crushing her seventh home run of the season over the left-field fence, giving Southern the 4-0 lead.
Southern Illinois kept on attacking as the bottom of the third inning rolled around. Freshman Allie Hanson led off the four-hit inning with a single up the middle. She was soon joined on base by Clare Ford, who came on to pinch-run for Wamsley after she reached on an error.
With a pair of runners on, sophomore Katie Wagner let her first pitch go by, but sent the second one burning down the left-field line for a double, scoring both Hanson and Ford.
Wagner scored on the very next at-bat as fellow sophomore Katie Schmidt went opposite-field for a single down the right-field line, putting SIU up 7-0.
Keeping the Bears scoreless through five innings, Southern Illinois entered the bottom of the fifth only needing one run to take the run-ruled win.
Wegmann gave Southern that opportunity as she took four straight pitches for a walk and made it to third base after back-to-back sacrifices by Wagner and Schmidt.
Dismore then slapped a full-count single up the middle to bring Wegmann in and give SIU the 8-0, five-inning win.
While SIU turned up the offense in the second game, the Saluki pitching also got the job done as Hamby (13-3) threw her second no-hitter of the season, and second of her career.
She struck out four Bears while giving up no runs, hits or walks. She was an error away from a perfect game as Becky Wegmann was not able to reign in a grounder by Porche in the first inning, giving MSU its only baserunner of the game.
Porche (13-14) takes the loss after picking up the win in the first game. She gave up four runs in her one inning of work on three hits.
Megan Ramsey relieved Porche in the second inning and lasted two innings in the circle. She gave up three runs, none of which were earned, on four hits while walking two and striking out one.
Lauren McGinley finished the game for Missouri State, giving up two hits and a walk for one run.
Southern Illinois returns to action on Wednesday, April 18 with a doubleheader at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. at UTM's Bettye Giles Field.
