Men's Tennis knocks off conference foe Creighton, 6-1

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team picked up its second Valley win of the season today when they beat the Creighton 6-1.
Despite dropping the No. 1 doubles' match as Rodrigo Lama and Milos Stankovic fell to Joe Eckert and Nikita Dudar 8-3, the Salukis were able to win the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Felipe Villasenor and Lucas Waked won at No. 2 over Chris Miller and Jose Guerra, 8-2. Sergio Sanchez and Hugo Vidal clinched the doubles point with their win over James McAvoy and Ross Allen at No. 3, 8-2.
After securing the doubles point the Salukis (11-6, 2-3 MVC) moved on to singles play where they won five of the six matches.
Villasenor bounced back from his loss Saturday against Drake's No. 1 with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Guerra.
"I thought Felipe played really well and had an answer for everything that Guerra threw at him," said head coach Dann Nelson.
Vidal swept past Eckert with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3. Waked knocked off McAvoy 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5.
"Vidal continues to cruise through his matches," said Nelson. "Waked had no trouble with his opponent."
Karl Nilsson dominated Allen at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Lama struggled at No. 4 but was able to pick up a 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 win over Miller. Sanchez was the only Saluki to drop his singles match with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Dudar.
Despite picking up the win, Nelson was upset with the way some of his players performed.
"You never want your seniors to give a less than adequate performance like we saw today," said Nelson. "I was disappointed in the play of both Rodrigo Lama and Sergio Sanchez both seniors who know what is expected of them. We will have to play much better on Tuesday if we want to win."
The Salukis will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. at the University Courts on campus.
