SALUKIS AND TIGERS PLAY WOOD BAT GAME TUESDAY
SIU and Missouri will square off in a wood bat game Tuesday in Sauget. The teams will play at GCS Stadium, the home of the Gateway Grizzlies. The Salukis have won five-straight wood bat games, including four against Saint Louis (2003-2006) and one versus Mizzou (2005). All four wins against the Billikens came at GCS Stadium, while the one against the Tigers came at the River City Rascals park in O'Fallon, Mo.
THE LAST TIME...
These teams met was two years ago. SIU shutout Mizzou, 7-0, in a wood bat game at T.R. Hughes Stadium (O'Fallon, Mo.). The Tigers were ranked 20th at the time. This year, Mizzou enters its matchup against the Dawgs ranked 29th, according to this week's Collegiate Baseball Poll.
WE CAN BE HEROES
Sunday's series finale between SIU and Evansville featured a pair of heroic performances by junior OF Dean Cademartori and freshman RHP Bryant George. Cademartori walked in the tying run on a borderline 3-2 pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth. Two innings later, he fouled off five consecutive two-strike pitches before knocking in the go-ahead run on a one-out double. Meanwhile, George inherited a one-out, second and third situation in the bottom of the ninth inning, but recorded a strikeout and groundball out to send the game to extra innings. George went on to retire six of the next seven he faced and pitched a one-two-three 11th en route to his first collegiate win.
DAWGS STEP OUT OF LEAGUE PLAY FOR NEXT FOUR GAMES
SIU plays its next four game against non-conference opponents. The Salukis tangle with Missouri (22-8, 3rd in Big 12) in a wood bat game at GCS Ballpark (Sauget, Ill.) Tuesday night. SIU then comes home to host Valparaiso (5-15) in a two-game series over Easter weekend, and hits the road to face SE Missouri State (19-8, 2nd in OVC) during midweek action on April 10. The Dawgs hold a 17-6 non-conference record, and have won five games in a row outside of league play.
HILLS LOOKS TO EXTEND 13-GAME HITTING STREAK
Junior Adam Hills carries a 13-game hitting streak into Tuesday's game against the Tigers. A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., Hills has registered multiple-hits in two of his last four games. He is one of four Salukis who have hit safely in 10 or more consecutive games this year.
