ST. LOUIS - The Missouri Valley Conference announced Wednesday that sophomore Jordan Cox has been named Men's Golfer of the Week following his 4-under-par first-place performance at the JSU National Invitational.
Cox, a sophomore transfer from Springfield College, is the first SIU men's golfer to receive the honor this season and took home the award in only his second tournament as a Saluki.
The Springfield, Ill. native shot a final round 4-under-par 68 to take first place out of the 11-team, 60-golfer field at the JSU National Invitational at Tunica National Golf Course in Tunica, Miss.
Cox opened the tournament with a 1-under 71 and 1-over 73 in the first day, before firing a tied tournament-low 68 in the final 18 holes for a three-round total of 4-under-par 212.
His first-place finish helped guide the Salukis to a second place team finish overall. Cox has led SIU to second place finishes in each of its first two tournaments, which is the best start for the Salukis since 2004-05 when they finished 3rd and 1st to open the season.
The Salukis return to action Sept. 24-25 at the Cleveland State Invitational at Sand Ridge Golf Course in Chardon, Ohio.
