OMAHA, Neb. - Today the Salukis wrapped up day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship in Omaha.
In doubles, Felipe Villasenor and Lucas Waked got the team off to a good start defeating Adrian Chermaci and Scott McCormick of Wichita State, 8-4.
"Felipe and Lucas played a good doubles match considering it was our first competition of the fall. They both served, returned, and closed the net very well today," said head coach Dann Nelson.
In singles, Villasenor was tested in the first set, falling behind 3-2 but coming back strong to win 6-3, 6-1.
Waked was up in his singles match 3-0 in the first set when he pulled his hip flexor. His opponent, Evgeny Samoylov of Bradley came back to take a 6-5 advantage. Waked then saved set points to push the set to a tiebreaker, eventually losing to Samoylov 7-6, 6-1.
"Lucas showed some guts saving six set points in the first set. He was definitely injured and limping around the court but he wanted to keep playing and see what happened," said Nelson.
Competition continues Saturday at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha.
