CARBONDALE, Ill.-Southern Illinois University began its annual intrasquad fall series Saturday at Abe Martin Field. The maroon team used timely hitting, good defense and a strong effort from its bullpen to beat the black team, 4-2, in game one.
The maroon team was out-hit, 8-4, but buried the black team with three extra base hits. Mark Kelly and Tom Cerven doubled and Tyler Bullock delivered a solo home run. Both Kelly and Cerven's hits came on 0-2 counts.
Bullock, who went 2-for-4, had this to say about his home run.
"I got ahold of a 3-1 fastball, middle-in. I was simply trying to drive a ball to the gap, but got a little more than I bargained for."
Maroon's bullpen, backed by clutch defense, stood firm in the end. Senior lefthander Daniel Wells allowed only two hits in 3.1 innings.
"All the credit goes to the defense," said Wells. "I used my slider early to keep them off-balance, while spotting my fastball on both sides of the plate."
Wells was credited with the win, while Brad Lawrence took the loss.
The maroon and black teams will play a best-of-seven-game series, continuing this week.
