NORMAL, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team shot a final-round 294 Monday to take sixth place at the 15-team D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at Illinois State University.
The Salukis entered the final 18 holes in sixth, but could not make up the eight-stroke difference in order to move into the top five. SIU (878) shot four strokes better than fifth place finisher Loyola College (874) in the last day, but finished four shots back for sixth overall.
"It's a disappointing finish with the type of start we've had," said senior co-captain Todd Obergoenner. "The bottom line is we just didn't play our best, and couldn't get any momentum going."
The No. 1-ranked University of Illinois shot its third low round of the tournament with a 4-under-par 276 to take first place with a 54-hole 831.
Behind the Fighting Illini, host team Illinois State (849) shot a 291 to hold on to second, and Western Illinois (854) and SIU-Edwardsville (865) shot a 279 and 289 to take third and fourth.
Senior Phillip Collier and junior Patrick Scheil both tied for 19th with a three-round total of 218. Collier shot the Salukis' best round of the day with a 1-over 71, and Scheil posted a 76.
Collier also had the fifth most total pars (36) out of the 88 golfers in the tournament.
"This was a course you really had to navigate, because it was so tight," said Collier. "Little mistakes could really cost you, and that pretty much sums up what happened to us."
Obergoenner and senior co-captain John Danielson shot a 73 and 74 to tie for 35th with a 222, and junior Blake Driskell rounded out the Saluki scores with a 228 to tie for 53rd.
Freshman Luke Dailey, who competed as an individual, also shot a 74 to tie for 30th with a 54-hole 221.
"We just need to regroup, and use the next two weeks to improve," said Obergoenner. "Our goal is to end the fall season on a high note with a win."
Southern Illinois will conclude its fall season at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational in Arlington, Texas Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 27-28.
