Football places five on MVFC All-Academic Team

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University placed five student-athletes on this year's Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Academic Team.
TE Ryan Kernes and LB Ryan Patton earned first-team honors, FS Mike McElroy garnered second-team accolades and QB/WR Joe Allaria and C Mike Farrell were named honorable mention.
Kernes (Civil Engineering) and Patton (Finance) are both 4.0 students in their respective majors, while McElroy (Biological Sciences) carries a 3.94 GPA. All three were named to this year's CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Team, as well.
Allaria owns a 3.70 GPA in Marketing and Farrell holds a 3.31 GPA in Accounting.
Thirty-nine student-athletes, including 14 who earned first-team honors, highlight the 2008 MVFC All-Academic Team.
Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions (freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. League sports information directors voted on the team by designating 11 players for first-team honors and 11 players for second-team honors.
