INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team defeated the Jaguars of IUPUI, 5-1, Saturday in Indianapolis. The teams did not play a doubles match due to court availability at the West Indy Racquet Club.
The Salukis (3-2) had no problem grabbing the victory in singles action to win the match. Lucas Waked got the team off to a good start defeating IUPUI's No. 1 seed, Gabriel Garcia, 6-4, 6-2.
"Lucas Waked played a smart match," said head coach Dann Nelson. "He was able to dismantle a very good player in Garcia."
Mariano Resptreo moved up to No. 2 singles this weekend, grabbing a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gregory Sosa, marking Restrepo's fourth straight win for season. At No. 3 singles, Hugo Vidal had no trouble with his win against E.J. DeChow, 6-1, 6-0. Anton Leonenko cruised in his match winning 6-1, 6-4 against Jorge Yunes at No. 4 singles. Senior captain Felipe Villasenor saw his first action of the season after missing the first four contests due to injury. He won the first set quickly, then found himself down 4-1 in the second set against Jesus Diaz. Villasenor then rallied, winning the last five games in a row to close out the match at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
"Felipe just needs more matches under his belt and hopefully he will be able to stay in the lineup, with his injuries in the past," Nelson said. "He is our senior captain and very valuable to us. He will be a big part of our success this year."
Freshman Chase Miller rounded out the match at No. 6 singles falling to Blake Powers, 6-2 in the first set. Miller came back in the second set, grabbing a 6-4 win, but wasn't able to hold off Powers in the third set. Powers took the win, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
"The guys took care of business today. Our goal was to start each match on a fast pace and never look back," said Nelson. "Our first sets were over quickly and we were able to hold them off in the second set."
The Salukis are now 3-2 for the season and will be back in action Feb. 27 at Louisville. Match time is set for noon.
