HONOLULU - The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team began spring break in Hawaii, with a match against Hawaii Pacific University on Monday. The Salukis fell to the Sea Warriors, giving SIU a 5-4 record.
Monday marked the Salukis first outdoor match of the season as they took on Hawaii Pacific University. No. 1 doubles team, Lucas Waked and Anton Leonenko got things off to a good start against Mark Mestan and Jan Hroch, winning the match 8-3. Hugo Vidal and Mariano Restrepo tried to keep things rolling at No. 2 doubles, but were unable to hold off Nikola Petrov and Daniel Luedi, falling 8-2. Sebastian Rubiano and Chase Miller battled Hendrik Bode and Anton Samuilau at No. 3 doubles, HPU won the match 8-3, to capture the doubles point.
Down 1-0 heading into singles, the Salukis tried to build some momentum. Waked fought hard for the win against Bode, but dropped the match 7-6, 6-2. Restrepo stepped in at No. 2 singles, but was unable to hold off Mestah, falling 6-1, 6-4. Vidal picked it up at No. 3 singles with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Samuilau to put the Salukis on the board. Leonenko lost his match to Petrov at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Rubiano won his first set at No. 5 singles, but Luedi came back and won the match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Wrapping up the match at No. 6 singles, Miller battled for the win against Hroch, but fell 6-0, 6-0.
"This is a very disappointing loss because we did not play well, or compete for the point," said head coach Dann Nelson. "Hugo Vidal put us on the score board and was able to keep his composure even after losing the first set, to come back and win his match in a super tiebreaker. Overall, we have much improving to do and each member of the team will need to step it up from now on."
