Men's Tennis defeats Western Illinois, 6-1

MACOMB, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team defeated Western Illinois, 6-1, Sunday in Macomb. The Salukis are now 4-3 for the season.
SIU swept the Leathernecks in doubles, capturing the point to start off the match with a 1-0 lead. Lucas Waked and Anton Leonenko teamed up at the top seed defeating Neil Lesinski and Sean Ragee-Nelson, 8-5. Hugo Vidal and Mariano Restrepo paired up against Zach Frisch and Francisco Ortiz at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, Felipe Villasenor and Sebastian Rubiano grabbed the win over Martin Boström and Michael Tui, 8-5.
"After sweeping doubles, we had a lot of confidence going into singles," said head coach Dann Nelson. "Today might be the best doubles effort we have had so far this year."
In singles action, the Salukis won five matches, giving them the win over the Leathernecks. Waked started things off at the No. 1 seed with a 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 win over Frisch. Restrepo was unable to hold off undefeated Boström at No. 2 singles, falling 6-3, 6-4. Hugo Vidal cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lesinski at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Villasenor, who is still nursing an injury, grabbed an easy win over Ortiz, 6-3, 6-1. Leonenko defeated Andy Jones at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 7-5. Rubiano was down a break late in the second set, but came back to close out the match at No. 6 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Ragee-Nelson.
The Salukis will play Murray State on March 5, in Paducah, Ky. The match time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
