CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's (10-8, 2-1) bullpen gave up 12 runs in a disappointing 15-6 loss to Indiana State (5-12, 1-2) earlier today in Missouri Valley Conference action at Abe Martin Field.
SIU relievers were badgered for 13 hits and ISU rallied to three four-run innings.
"Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong today," said Saluki head coach Dan Callahan. "We had some opportunities, but didn't capitalize. And, we fell apart on the mound."
Andrew Dunn, who started for the injured David Kington, was rocky on the mound again. Dunn allowed four hits and three runs in four innings.
SIU held a 4-3 lead after four innings, but self-destructed in a hurry when it gave way to its bullpen in the fifth.
ISU batted around to score four runs on three hits in the fifth. Chris Schmidt singled and scored with the help of two wild pitches and a balk. Brian Oliver touched home on a single by David Brumagin, Brian Jett scored on a fielder's choice and Pascual Del Real knocked in a run when he doubled to left. There were also three walks in the inning, helping push the Sycamore lead to 7-4.
SIU pulled to within a run after adding one in the fifth and another in the seventh, but fell victim to two more ISU attacks.
The Sycamores batted around again in each of the eighth and ninth innings, piling up a combined eight runs on 10 hits to polish off the 15-6 win.
The Salukis had the bases loaded three times, left 12 runners on base and committed three errors on the day. On the series, SIU loaded the bases on 10 occasions, going 3-for-11 (.273) in those situations.
Micah Spencer (1-1) picked up his first win of the season. Spencer gave up seven hits, walked five, struck out three and allowed five runs in five innings.
Tom Danahy (0-1) was credited with the loss after giving up two runs and a hit in one-third of an inning. Danahy was one of seven Salukis who pitched in the game.
Offensively, 10 Sycamores got hits, with Schmidt going 5-for-6 with four runs scored and one RBI. ISU finished with 17 hits, the most the Dawgs have allowed in a game this season.
Tyler Lairson led the Salukis with four hits. Lairson went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. He had a monsterous series, hitting .818 (9-for-11) with four doubles, two RBI, a .833 on-base percentage and 1.182 slugging percentage in three games against the Sycamores.
SIU plays five games in the next seven days. The Salukis return to action when they travel to Eastern Illinois Tuesday.
