CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Scott Elmendorf doubled and came around to score the winning run on an error with two outs in the top of the 11th inning to give Southern Illinois University (24-18) a 3-2 victory over Illinois (25-17) earlier tonight at Illinois Field.

The Illini committed six errors in the game, more than the total runs of both teams combined.

Tied, 2-2, Elmendorf doubled down the right field line and quickly scored the unearned run on a throwing error by Illinois shortstop Brandon Wikoff.

SIU, which last beat Illinois in 1999, snapped a streak of seven consecutive losses against the Illini.

SIU struck first with two runs in the third. Chris Murphy walked and Aaron Roberts was hit by a pitch to give the Salukis runners at first and second with one out. Both runners took off when Bret Maugeri struck out, but Illini catcher Aaron Johnson's throw sailed into center field allowing Murphy to score and Roberts to go to third. Mark Kelly then doubled home Roberts.

After Matt Dittman touched home on a sacrifice fly by Mike Giller in the third, Illinois added another run to tie things up in the fourth. Wikoff reached on a leadoff bunt single and scored on Johnson's ensuing double to bring the game to a 2-2 deadlock.

SIU had a total of 16 baserunners on only four hits. The Salukis, who came up empty twice with the bases loaded, had 11 runners reach base by way of a hit by pitch, walk or error.

Daniel Wells (3-1) picked up the win in relief. Wells recorded three-straight strikeouts when Illinois had the tying run on third in the 11th. He allowed only one hit and struck out four in two scoreless innings.

Mike Sterk (2-1) suffered the loss. He gave up a run on one hit in two innings.

SIU ends its nine-game road stretch at Murray State Wednesday. First pitch is at 3 p.m., CST.
