MURRAY, Ky. - Southern Illinois University (25-18) rallied for six runs in the eighth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and beat Murray State (16-24), 14-11, earlier today in a slugfest at Reagan Field.
SIU extended its winning streak to four games and posted its third-straight come-from-behind victory.
Trailing, 10-8, SIU loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. Adam Hills singled and scored on a double by Mark Kelly. Dean Cademartori followed with a bloop single to right and Aaron Roberts walked to put Salukis at every base.
Kelly scored the go-ahead run when Chris Crank was hit by a pitch. Cademartori then touched home on a passed ball. Roberts and Crank scored on an ensuing error, before Scott Elmendorf knocked in Owen Mackedon to give SIU a 14-10 lead.
MSU threatened in its final two at-bats. The Thoroughbreds loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but only came away with one run after Adam Curynski struck out pinch-hitter Matt Hon on three pitches to get out of the jam.
An inning later, the `Breds had their leadoff man on base. That runner never made it past first as Curynski got three-straight outs to end the game. Curynski earned his third save of the season.
Ian Reinhart (2-0) was credited with the win. Reinhart allowed three hits and one run in 2.2 innings. He also struck out three.
Reinhart entered the game behind starting lefthander Nick Rice and reliever Andrew Dunn, who ran into major trouble early on.
Rice gave up eight hits and six runs in just 1.2 innings, before giving way to Dunn in the second. Dunn allowed nine hits and four runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Anthony Stacy (1-3) took the fall for MSU. Stacy gave up five hits and six runs in 2.1 innings.
Offensively, MSU pounded out 21 hits on the day, with the first five hitters in its lineup accounting for 15. Tyler Owen and Cory Hodskins each went 4-for-4 to lead the surge. SIU last gave up 20 or more hits in a game against Wichita State on April 15, 2007.
Elmendorf and Kelly led the Salukis with four hits each. Kelly, Elmendorf, Cademartori and Roberts drove in two or more runs for SIU, as well. The Dawgs finished with a total of 17 hits.
SIU, which ended a nine-game road trip, returns home to host Creighton in a three-game series, beginning Friday at 3 p.m., CST.
