CARBONDALE, Ill. - Dean Cademartori's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth gave Southern Illinois University (16-11) a 5-4 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5-19) earlier today at Abe Martin Field. The Salukis beat the Panthers in walk-off fashion for the second-straight time.
SIU trailed, 4-2, but tied the game up with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Deadlocked at 4-4, Aaron Roberts slugged a first-pitch double to lead off the ninth. Cademartori then stepped in and pulled ahead 2-1 in the count before belting UWM starter Andy Heterbrueg's fourth offering over the head of right fielder Troy Vesling. Roberts scored easily to give the Dawgs their second consecutive one-run victory.
"I was pleased with how we never gave up," said Saluki head coach Dan Callahan. "We got the key hits we needed and had good enough pitching to win the game. It doesn't happen very often where you win back-to-back games with walk-off hits."
Saluki starting lefthander Shawn Joy fell victim to some early trouble, but recovered nicely. Joy, after giving up three runs in the first, tossed five-straight scoreless innings, retiring the Panthers in order on three occasions.
Joy gave way to Tyler Choate in the ninth. Choate (2-0) threw one scoreless inning en route to his second win of the season.
Hetebrueg (1-5) limited the Salukis to just three hits in his first six frames, but began to show signs of fatigue in the late innings. Hetebrueg allowed seven hits and five runs in eight innings. He also struck out four and walked two. Hetebrueg surrendered three runs on four hits over the last three innings of the game.
Offensively, both teams had seven hits on the day.
Chris Murphy and Cademartori led the Dawgs with two hits apiece, while Shaun Wegner, Nick Wischer and Wes Munson added two each for UWM.
The Salukis, who improved to 8-1 at home, go for the sweep of the Panthers at 1 p.m., CST, Sunday. Righthander David Kington (1-1) will start on the mound.
