Women second, men third after day two of MVC Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois' Brenton Siemons and Bianca Stuart defended Missouri Valley Conference titles Saturday afternoon on day two of the State Farm MVC Track and Field Championships.
Siemons took first in the shot put with a toss of 59-04.75, while Stuart defended her long jump title with a jump of 20-11.75. Stuart's mark set a new track and MVC Championship record.
Tom Smith finished third behind Siemons in the shot put with a toss of 53-03.50 to earn all-conference honors.
In the team standings, through eight events scored, the Salukis sit second on the women's side with 71 points behind Northern Iowa's 104.5 points. Illinois State sits third with 48.5 points followed by Wichita State (33), Missouri State (26), Indiana State (26) tied for fifth and Drake (3).
In the men's race, Wichita State leads the rankings with 89.5 points followed closely by Northern Iowa with 77. The Salukis sit third with 64 points, Indiana State (40.5) and Illinois State (40) battling for fourth and fifth. Drake sits sixth with 1 point.
In the women's shot put, the Salukis garnered two all-conference marks finishing second and third. Brittany Riley (48-05.50) and Rickael Roach (47-02.25) recorded all-MVC honors with regional qualifying marks.
Trenton McKinney earned his first all-conference accolade with third place in the long jump with a leap of 23-09.
SIU picked up three top-five finishes in the men's and women's steeplechase events. Jason Ordway finished third in the men's race in a time of 9:14.20, while A'Seret Dokubo (10:50.97) and Megan Hoelscher (10:57.39) crossed the line in fourth and fifth respectively.
The Salukis advanced nine men and nine women to Sunday's finals in nine events. Sammy Biggs and Antoine Jennings will run in the finals of the 400-meter dash and 200-meter dash. In the 200, Brandon Deloney and Stevie Warren also advanced, Deloney entering finals with the top league time. Warren and Deloney will also compete in the 100 finals with regional qualifying marks, along with Justin C. Kozak.
On the women's side, Andrea Norris advanced in the 100 and 200. Stuart qualified for finals of the 100 after her victory in the long jump. Terri Counts and Meredith Hayes will compete in the finals of the 100 hurdles, while Kendra Deck and Tredene Davis qualified in the 400 hurdles. Toni Whitfield is the fourth athlete slated to compete in the 800 finals on Sunday and Kandise Thompson advanced in the 400.
