Track and Field begins competition at Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Southern Illinois University track and field team competed in seven events on the first day of the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio today.
The highlight of the day for the Salukis came when freshman Jake Deiters threw the discus 174-03 (53.12m), surpassing the regional-qualifying mark of 169-07 (51.70m). Deiters placed eighth in the event with the mark, which stands as a personal best for the season. Also competing in the event was Thomas Smith, who finished 26th with a toss of 152-00 (46.34m).
Freshman Emily Toennies provided another highlight for SIU when she qualified for Junior Nationals in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:36.45. Toennies took sixth place in the event. Shanna MacLagan placed 12th in the event with a time of 18:38.20.
For the men, Daniel Dunbar placed ninth in the 5,000 with a time of 15:09.79, Kevin Doran took 11th with his 15:12.47 and Brad Wrage finished 17th with a time of 15:32.65.
The Saluki women picked up three top-15 finishes in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. A'Seret Dokubo finished eighth with a new personal-best time of 10:52.93, Nefeteri Williams placed 13th with an 11:17.53 finish and Megan Hoelscher placed 14th with her 11:21.51.
Jason Ordway (22nd, 9:18.66) and Jason Brosseau (30th, 9:43.74) both established new personal bests while competing in the Steeplechase for the men.
In the 1,500-meter run, Greg McBride placed 13th with a time of 3:56.22, which is a new personal best for the sophomore. Jeff Schirmer placed 15th in the event with a time of 3:58.20.
For the women in the 1,500, Toni Whitfield placed 17th with a 4:42.46 and Jamie Pfister finished 21st with a new personal-best time of 4:46.21.
The Jesse Owens Classic will continue tomorrow with field events beginning at 3:30 p.m. and running events starting at 4 p.m.
