Softball hosts annual Saluki Invitational this weekend

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois softball team will host its annual Saluki Invitational fall exhibition tournament this Saturday and Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium.
The two-day tournament will feature Tennessee-Martin, Southeast Missouri State, John A. Logan College, SIU-Edwardsville, and IUPUI.
SIU is coming off its 12th straight 30-win season after posting a 30-24 record in 2008, and went 11-2 in three fall exhibition tournaments last year.
"The fall season is invaluable because it allows you to put players in different positions and make different lineups," said head coach Kerri Blaylock. "It's also the freshman's first taste of college ball, so it gives them a change to shake some of those nerves."
The 2008-09 Saluki roster will contain five seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen.
"We've had a lot of inter-squad scrimmages so far," said Blaylock. "But we're ready to get back after it, and play against someone other than ourselves."
The tournament will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m., and SIU will play at noon and 2 p.m. against UT-Martin and SIU-Edwardsville. On Sunday, the Salukis will face IUPUI at noon and John A. Logan at 4 p.m.
Admission for the tournament will be $5 for adults, and $3 for children and SIU staff members.
Following the Saluki Invitational, Southern Illinois will conclude its fall exhibition season next weekend at the Illinois Collegiate Softball Tournament in Normal, Ill. Sept. 20-21.
