Celebrating SIU Women's Athletics announces dates for festivities

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Saluki Athletics has announced the dates of its Celebrating SIU Women's Athletics festivities. On January 17 and 18, 2009, Saluki Athletics will honor former female student-athletes who competed at SIU prior to 1980.
Saturday, Jan. 17th will feature a brunch at 11 a.m. in the SIUC Student Center Ballrooms, preceded by a reception at 10:30 a.m. The former female student-athletes will be recognized during halftime of the women's basketball game as SIU hosts Drake at 3 p.m. The women will be recognized again during halftime of the men's basketball against Bradley at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18th. Both games will be televised live.
This project is the work of a very dedicated committee including Dr. Charlotte West, Dr. Julee Illner, Dr. Kay Brechtelsbauer, Judy Auld, Claudia Blackman and Sarah Haas. The committee identified individuals who represented SIU in competition against other schools prior to and including 1980. These names were gathered from athletics department records, Daily Egyptian archives, Obelisks from the time period and "Echo" newsletters from the old Department of Physical Education. In all, over 750 names were included in mailings sent out to gauge interest.
