Warner, McElroy, honored by Missouri Valley Football Conference

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University won two of the three MIssouri Valley Football Conference honors this week. RB Larry Warner was named offensive player of the week and S Mike McElroy was selected as the league's defensive player of the week.
Warner had a career-high 151 yards and scored two touchdowns, one of which came on a 95-yard kickoff return, to lead the 12th-ranked Salukis to a season-opening win over Hampton.
A native of Vicksburg, Miss., Warner started in the Saluki backfield for the first time. He carried the ball 19 times and caught two passes for 39 yards. Warner finished with 353 all-purpose yards on the night, marking the fourth-most for a single game in Valley Football history.
McElroy, who hails from Lowell, Mich., picked off two passes, recovered a fumble and had five tackles to lead a Saluki defense that forced five turnovers against Hampton.
McElroy intercepted Pirate quarterback Herbert Bynes on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter. His takeaways led to a total of 10 points in the win.
