ST. LOUIS, Mo. - For the second week in a row a Saluki defensive back has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as the league office announced Sunday that Southern Illinois junior cornerback Korey Lindsey was selected for the award.
Lindsey, a 2008 Sports Network third team all-America and first team All-MVFC pick, receives his second career player of the week honor after recording a career-high 12 tackles and two interceptions in SIU's 27-8 win over Youngstown State.
This is the third time this season a Saluki defensive player has received the award and it is seventh overall on the team. Senior cornerback Brandon Williams was named the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18 after the Dawgs beat then second-ranked Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Linebacker Brandin Jordan received the first defensive player of the week award after the season opener.
Lindsey's two picks against the Penguins gave him his second two-interception game of the season and the fourth of his career. He also registered his first career game with double-digit tackles, as he was the leading tackler in Saturday's game.
The Baton Rouge, La. native had his first career sack on Saturday. The play came on a first-and-goal at the SIU two-yard line and he and Dolapo Adubifa dropped the Penguins back 17 yards with the sack. On the next play Lindsey intercepted Brandon Summers with 3:12 left in the game.
His six interceptions through seven games in 2009 are tied for the most in the nation. Lindsey, who was also a preseason all-American this year, leads the Salukis with 46 tackles.
No. 3 Southern Illinois (6-1, 5-0 MVFC) travels to Terre Haute, Ind. on Oct. 31 as the Dawgs seek their 12th-straight conference victory. Kickoff is set for 11:05 a.m. CT.
