Pre-game Notes
SIU Captains: 14, 21, 39, 79
Southern Illinois won the toss, deferred to the second half. YSU to defend the South goal.
First Quarter
Senior right tackle Shawn Smith made his 46th-consecutive start and senior linebacker Brandin Jordan made his 42th career start. Redshirt freshman quarterback Paul McIntosh made his first career start and completed his first three passes in the game.
Kyle Walker recorded his fifth and a half sack on the first defensive possession of the game.
Mike McElroy recorded his third tackle for a loss on the year just inside of the nine-minute mark.
Southern Illinois did not score in the first quarter for the second-straight game. It was just the fourth quarter this season that SIU did not put any points on the scoreboard.
Second Quarter
Deji Karim scored the first touchdown of the game at 14:10 on a fourth-and-two from the four-yard line. It was his 19th career touchdown, tying him with Brandon Jacobs for the eighth most in school history.
Morris' 37-yard reception near the 12-minute mark was the longest of his career.
McIntosh scored his first career touchdown rushing the ball at 8:11 to put SIU up 14-0.
McElroy got his second tackle for a loss in the game at the eight-minute mark.
Chauncey Mixon pass breakup at the line of scrimmage inside of five minutes was the 16th of his career. That is tied for the eighth-most in school history.
Bryce Morris blocked a punt at 2:22 and Beau Hoffman picked it up at the four-yard line and walked in for the touchdown. It was SIU's second blocked punt of the season and second in as many weeks. It was the first time since late October of 2006 that the Salukis blocked a punt in back-to-back games (Oct. 21 vs. Western Kentucky and Oct. 28 at Missouri State).
SIU outgained Indiana State 221 to 69 in the first half and had 12 first downs to the Sycamores five.
For the second-straight game, Southern Illinois held its opponent scoreless through the first 30 minutes of the game.
Third Quarter
Deji Karim returned the kickoff to start the second half 51 yards. It was his third kickoff return of over 50 yards on the season.
Scott Ravanesi's punt at 13:52 was downed at the nine-yard line - his 15th of the season.
Ryan Patton and Dolapo Adubifa combined for SIU's second sack of the game.
Karim's 23-yard run at the 11-minute mark was 15th rush this year that went for over 20 yards.
Kyle Harruff caught his first pass of the season, which was good for a first down.
Kyle Dougherty hit a 30-yard field goal at 0:55, the 43rd of his career and 13th of the season.
Lance Caldwell intercepted his second pass of the season late in the quarter, extending SIU's streak to nine-straight games with at least on pick (all eight this year).
Fourth Quarter
Brad Briggs recorded SIU's first safety since Oct. 18, 2008 (against Youngstown State).
Bobby Brenneisen completed the second pass of his career to C.J. Robertson for a first down.
