Swimming and Diving sweeps Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team continued its undefeated streak against the University of Evansville in the first dual mach of the 2009-10 season Wednesday night.
The Salukis collected 17 first-place finishes as the women edged UE 123-120 and the men finished at a comfortable 165-77.
Under the guidance of head coach Rick Walker for the past 17 seasons, SIU has compiled a combined 28-0 record against the Purple Aces.
The men took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. Tim Silkaitis, Jameson Kuper, Justin Wolfe, and Tony Bousquet finished with a time of 1:34.97 to take the event. Kyle Riekena, Chris Gaffney, Matt Parsons, and Jared Bradd came in just behind at 1:37.67.
Two SIU sophomores swept the 1000 free, with Jennifer Kwok swimming 10:29.67 and Cesar Perez finishing at 9:56.43. Kwok also placed third in the 500 free with a time of 5:10.83.
Senior women Keli Kramer, Therese Mattsson, and Tovah Gasparovich placed among the top three in the 200 free, the 50 free, and the 100 free respectively. Classmates Silkaitis and Kuper won their individual events as well.
First-year Saluki standout Kirsten Groome took first in the 200 and 500 free with times of 1:54.99 and 4:51.95. Her 500 free time currently competes with some of the top times in the nation.
Also in her collegiate debut, freshman Michelle Bell came out on top in the 1-meter dive, scoring 226.55.
Now with the first official dual meet in the books, the Salukis will return to the pool Saturday, Oct. 10 when they host Miami of Ohio at 1 p.m.
