ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois redshirt freshman quarterback Paul McIntosh and sophomore defensive end Kyle Russo have been named to the 2009 Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team that was released Monday.
Russo, a transfer from North Texas, recorded 25 tackles, six sacks and 6.5 tackles for a loss in his first season as a Saluki. In last weekend's first round playoff victory over Eastern Illinois, Russo returned a fumble 28 yards for a touchdown. His 0.67 sacks per game are the fifth most in the conference this season and he helped SIU to a league-leading 35 sacks.
McIntosh took over at quarterback in SIU's seventh game of the season after Chris Dieker went down with an injury. He led the Salukis to a 6-0 record under center, including a 5-0 mark as a starter, while Southern Illinois went on to receive the No. 1 national ranking from The Sports Network.
McIntosh has thrown for 839 yards so far this year with eight touchdowns and just three interceptions. He has also rushed for 525 yards and averages 7.1 yards per carry. The Evansville, Ind. native has rushed for over 100 yards in each of his last two games, becoming just the second Saluki quarterback ever to rush for over 100 yards twice in a career.
