CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's swimming and diving team dropped its first dual match of the season Saturday afternoon to the University of Illinois 154-89.
The Salukis (3-1) placed among the top three in 10 out of the 13 events but the Fighting Illini (5-0) simply outnumbered SIU to come away with the victory.
Both teams entered the meet with undefeated dual records on the season¬ - Southern coming off of a decisive win against Washington (Mo.) last weekend and Illinois returning to the pool for the second day in a row after posting a win against Illinois State last night.
The depth of Illinois' roster showed itself early, as the Illini took the first two spots in the 400 medley relay. Jennifer Kwok quickly got the Salukis back on track with an impressive win in the 1000 free, finishing nearly nine seconds in front of the competition at 10:24.93.
Therese Mattsson maintained perfection, posting first-place times in the 200 free (1:52.05) and the 100 free (52.11). The senior from Stockholm, Sweden has won every race she has competed in so far this season, totaling nine first-place finishes overall.
Kirsten Groome also recorded two wins on the day, finishing first in the 400 IM (4:26.73) and the 500 free (4:57.31).
SIU came within one second of taking the 400 free relay to close out the meet, but its second-place effort was not enough to withstand Illinois.
The Salukis will have a week to train before traveling with the men's team to Missouri for a dual meet on Nov. 14. Competition is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. CT.
