WACO, Texas - Southern Illinois cornerback Korey Lindsey headlines the 2009 AFCA Football Championship Subdivision All-America team that was announced Tuesday by the American Football Coaches Association. The AFCA All-America team is voted upon exclusively by the coaches in the FCS.
Lindsey was the lone Saluki selected to the AFCA All-America team, but he becomes the third SIU player to receive all-America honors this year. Seniors Deji Karim and Brandin Jordan were named to the Walter Camp Foundation team on Monday.
Lindsey, a 6-0, 190-pound junior from Baton Rouge, La., becomes just the second Saluki defensive back to garner All-America status in back-to-back seasons. He was named a third team All-American by The Sports Network after his sophomore season. Alexis Moreland was the first Saluki voted to back-to-back All-America teams, doing so in 2002 and 2003.
As a leader in the SIU secondary, Lindsey guided the Dawgs to 23 interceptions in 2009, which is the second most in a year in school history. The Salukis led the nation for much of the season in passes intercepted, and were only surpassed by Montana who will finish the year having played two more games than Southern.
Lindsey, a 2009 first team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, intercepted six passes of his own on the year and now has 13 picks in his career, which ranks No. 3 in school history. He needs seven interceptions in his senior season to tie Terry Taylor's school record of 20.
He had a pair of games (9/19 vs. Southwest Baptist & 10/24 vs. Youngstown State) where he picked off two passes. Add that to his 2008 numbers and Lindsey has four career multi-interception games.
Lindsey finished the season as the teams fourth-leading tackler with 63 stops. He added 2.5 tackles for a loss, a half sack and one fumble recovery to his stat line. Adding in his four pass break-ups, and Lindsey was credited with 10 passes defended on the year.
A multi-tool athlete for the Dawgs, Lindsey was used as the teams punt returner all season long. He returned 24 punts for 124 yards (5.2 average) on the year with a long of 23.
He enters his senior season in 2010 with a lot of steam behind him, as he has garnered first team All-MVFC accolades in each of the past two seasons.
