COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving teams struggled on the first day of competition at the University of Missouri Tiger Invitational.
In addition to Southern, Mizzou hosts Missouri S&T, Boise State, Colorado State, Drury, Arizona State, Nebraska and North Dakota for the weekend meet.
The Saluki women tallied 61 total points Friday. Freshman Kirsten Groome contributed 14 of those points as she finished fifth out of 24 swimmers in the 500 free. Therese Mattsson posted an identical finish in the 50 free, swimming a season-best time of 23.61.
SIU men currently sit in third place with 187 points after day one. El Badrawi recorded a seventh place finish in the 500 free, also with his team's season-best time of 4:36.68. Jameson Kuper captured a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM at 1:51.28, while Anthony Bousquet fell just outside the top-five in the 50 free with a sixth-place 21.26.
In the men's 1-meter dive, Justin Ruszkowski finished fourth with a score of 278.70.
The Tiger Invitational will continue Saturday morning, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m.
