MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Righthander Jeff Green allowed only two hits and struck out four in 5.1 sparkling innings to lead Troy University (3-1) to a 10-3 win over Southern Illinois (1-3) earlier today at the Caravelle Resort Tournament.
Green tossed five innings of two-hit shutout baseball before allowing his only runs in the sixth.
Troy's offense took advantage of back-to-back, two-out errors to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Blake Martz reached safely when his pop-up glanced off the glove of Scott Elmendorf, allowing Ryan Ditthardt to score. A throwing error by Wade Dutton followed, as Brett Henry and Martz touched home on the play.
SIU pulled to within a run on Michael Stalter's two-run homer in the sixth, but the Trojans answered with five runs in the bottom half of that inning to put the game out of reach.
After starting lefthander Jimmy Cornell was relieved by Brad Lawrence, Trevor Tyre ignited the rally with a one-out, two-run homer to left. Lawrence then walked Martz, before giving way to Kellen Candau. Candau gave up a single to Shohei Fujita and two-RBI double to Steven Felix. Ryan Ditthardt's run-scoring single off Daniel Wells extended Troy's lead to 8-2.
The Salukis scored once more on a solo home run by Chris Murphy in the seventh, but Troy countered when Michael Precise's two-run homer sailed over the left field wall to cap the 10-3 win.
Green (1-0) also gave up six hits and walked one on the day en route to his first win of the season.
Cornell (0-1) suffered the tough luck loss striking out four, giving up four hits and allowing three unearned runs in five innings.
Offensively, Stalter and Tyler Bullock led the Dawgs with two hits apiece. Stalter went 2-for-4 with a run scored, home run and two RBI, while Bullock was 2-for-3.
SIU finished the Caravelle Resort Tournament on a three-game losing streak. The Salukis were outscored 34-8 in their last three games of the tourney after scoring 19 runs in their season-opener Friday.
SIU visits Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
