CARBONDALE, Ill. - Phil Meyer was hired as Southern Illinois University's offensive line coach Monday. Meyer joins the Salukis from the University of Minnesota, where he coached the last two seasons.
A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Meyer worked as offensive coordinator at SIU from 1989-93 with the additional positional responsibilities of offensive line (1989), quarterbacks and running backs (1990-93) and assistant head coach (1992-93).
"We are very fortunate to be able to hire an individual with the credentials that Phil possesses," said SIU head coach Dale Lennon. "Because of Phil's coaching background, recruiting connections, and familiarity with the SIU football program, he will be a valuable addition to our staff."
Prior to joining the Gophers in 2007, Meyer spent seven seasons (2000-07) as head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where he helped restore pride in the Titans' NCAA Division III football program. Meyer won 31 games at UW-Oshkosh and held a record of 16-4 in non-conference games. Before Meyer's appointment in April of 2000, it had taken the Titans 10 seasons (1990-99) to surpass 30 victories.
Meyer's other coaching credentials include stints at Iowa State (Quarterbacks, 1998-99; Tight Ends/Special Teams, 1995-97), Illinois State (Offensive Coordinator, 1994), Western Illinois (Offensive Line, February of 1994), Northern Arizona (Assistant Offensive Line, December of 1988), Southeast MIssouri State (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks/Running Backs, 1986-87; Offensive Line, 1984-85), Illinois (Graduate Assistant Offensive Line, 1982-83) and New Berlin Eisenhower High School (Wis.) (Assistant, 1981).
Meyer attended Milwaukee Pius XI High School, where he was a starter on the Popes' 1972 WISAA state championship football team. He went on to play one season of college football at UW-Milwaukee and three seasons at Illinois State. Meyer started 44 straight games in the defensive secondary for the two schools.
Meyer received both his bachelor's degree in 1979 and master's degree in 1980 from Illinois State. He remained at his alma mater to begin his coaching career as a student assistant (1978) and graduate assistant (1979-80). He and his wife, Brandi, have two daughters, Miranda and Madison.
